We promised you that we’d officially warn George Osborne against raising duty in the Autumn Statement and we have. This week Howard and I braved the rain and autumnal gales outside the Treasury to hand-deliver evidence supporting our argument that raising fuel duty - especially diesel - would damage the economy. Our closely argued letter shows that the UK has the highest fuel duty regime of any of the 56 countries in Continental Europe, that any increase in diesel duty would increase costs for hauliers which would be passed down the supply chain to the high street and consumers. And that could trigger higher inflation ...

FairFuelUK Campaigners are attending all three Major Party Political Conferences in 2014. We will write a review of each conference experience and will be honest, apolitical and fair about the way the Campaign is considered at each of the three Party events. Here is the first of those reviews.

FairFuelUK attended the Labour Party Conference in Manchester and held a Fringe Event in the Midland Hotel, where the great and the good of current Labour Party Politics were staying right next to their conference and exhibition centre.

Tjeo de Pencier, CEO FTAThe Freight Transport Association has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer ahead of his Autumn Statement on 5 December, asking him to confirm his commitment to freeze fuel duty until 2015 in order to stimulate economic growth and give businesses confidence to invest in the future. The Chancellor, George Osborne, has shown a continuous reluctance to increase fuel duty, and in his speech to the Conservative party conference in September he said that he wanted to freeze fuel duty for the rest of this Parliament. However, this came with the significant caveat "provided we can find the savings to pay for it."

Reacting to news that September's Fuel Duty Rise is Cancelled FairFuelUK spokesman Quentin Willson said:

This is welcome news for families and businesses across the UK as far as it goes. It is a sign that the Government is listening, but there will be widespread disappointment that the cancellation of this duty rise gives them no immediate relief from climbing fuel prices. Cancelling a rise that really shouldn't happen is not enough. The Government needs to cut duty substantially to get the economic growth we all need.

The good news is that our Campaign ...

The Treasury invited the FairFuelUK Team led by Quentin Willson to meet with Minister Danny Alexander on Monday 29th October. This key event was covered by the media nationally and was most welcomed by FairFuelUK and its backers.  It is unprecedented that a campaigning tax reform group gets to meet a Treasury Minister and their high quality team of Tax experts to discuss an issue that effects everyone in the UK. The Treasury was most welcoming and very engaging in discussing FairFuelUK's latest research that was carried out by the highly respected National Institute of Economic and Social Research and financed by the RHA, one of FairFuelUK’s key major supporters.

The report ...

Quentin Willson has challenged the Chair of the Back Bench Business Committee, Natascha Engel, on the delay surrounding a parliamentary debate on the price of petrol and diesel as called for in the FairFuelUK epetition.  Quentin faced Natascha Engel on BBC Politics. You can see it here

Immediately after the live show, Quentin joined other members of the FairFuelUK team at a briefing for MPs at the House of Commons. Many of the MPs present acknowledged the strength of feeling demonstrated by the 10,000 emails that have arrived at Parliament since Friday afternoon from FairFuelUK supporters.  The ...

The UK’s high rate of fuel duty means that £1,000 of diesel bought in bulk on the continent will take a truck 220 miles further than if it were bought in the UK, according to the Freight Transport Association which warns that UK operators are under increasing competitive pressure.

The warning follows the news that the Fair Fuel Campaign’s e-petition has now received 102,000 signatures making it eligible for a debate in the House of Commons.

FTA chief Theo de Pencier said: "With rates of duty on the Continent up to 24 pence per litre lower than on this side of ...
