Ministers reject diesel scrappage scheme 
as 'ineffective and expensive'
Calls for a diesel scrappage scheme have mounted in the wake of the emissions scandal

Ministers have rejected mounting calls for a diesel car scrappage scheme to help tackle air pollution, claiming it would be ineffective and prohibitively expensive.

MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Efra) select committee on Wednesday joined the ranks of influential groups urging the Government to offer cash incentives to drivers of old, polluting diesel cars to trade them in and buy low emissions vehicles.

But a Government spokesman told the Telegraph it had no plans for a car scrappage scheme.

The FairFuelUK Campaign and its 1.3m supporters welcomes The Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee (Efra) calling for a diesel engine scrappage scheme but are concerned their latest call for five cities - Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham, Derby and Southampton – to have extra powers to charge polluting vehicles to enter new clean air zones may give free license for local authorities to have a 'green' excuse to fleece money from already highly taxed drivers to fill the authorities' financial black holes.

FairFuelUK, the UK’s leading and most successful protest group on road fuel pricing, is warning the government not to penalise diesel drivers with higher rates of fuel duty or cause a crash in secondhand values through misinformation.  There has to be a measured, practical and well informed response to the issues related to diesel emissions, the VW saga and its undoubted impact on the economy.
